The Bark River Special Hunting Knife is a re-creation of one of the earliest and most famous patterns of the Grand San Francisco Knifemaking Renaissance. This pattern was made by the then World Famous Firm: Will & Finck.

The Firm of Will & Finck was the Premier Cutler of the whole West Coast from their start in 1861 until they eventually closed in 1934. They made Razors, Bowie Knives, Hunting Knives, Medical Cutting Instruments, and Utility Knives. Will & Finck literally set the standard for High Quality Cutlery on the West Coast.

The Special Hunting Knife was indeed special. This pattern was one of the first dedicated Heavy Hunters ever made. It was made for the newly wealthy people that had just made their first fortune from importing, exporting, or trading in hides or exploiting the Gold and Silver mines.

These newly Wealthy Americans wanted to have special gear for hunting and excursions into the Outdoors and the Wilds of Northern California. The pattern was copied in 1906 by Webster Marble in the Mid-West and sold all over the U.S. in his new line of American Hunting Knives. This 19th Century pattern is as useful and relevant today as it was in the 1800s when it was first introduced.
A truly rugged knife for real use on Outdoor and Hunting trips World-Wide.

The sheath we chose for this Project is also very special. It is also not that different from the Original Will & Finck sheath. In 1900 a man from Gladstone Michigan introduced a sheath design of note. This fellow was Milton Rowland. He made and sold these sheaths for and through the Marble’s Safety Axe Company (Marbles). The Rowland sheath was an optional sheath for Marbles Knives. Milton Rowland also was the inventor of the Marble’s Safety Folding Hunting Knife and his name is on the Patent with Webster Marble. Not much is known about Mr. Rowland because he Literally Disappeared in 1910. Gone. Never to be heard from again.

To us, this seemed like the Perfect Sheath to re-introduce with this Classic Knife.
The Knife and Sheath – Together – Make this a New American Classic
